In “The Boarding House”, the primary mood evoked is gloom. The mood is gloomy because the reader is exposed to the harsh realities of life demonstrated to them by the characters actions and the outcome of the story. One interpretation of the ending is that Mr. Doran is forced to marry Polly. This is a gloomy outcome as we know that the characters do not want to get married and are unable to do anything about there situation.
Another mood of the story is worry. Mr. Doran is worried about tarnishing his reputation in his work place and with his friends. And we see the Polly is crying as she doesn’t know what to do and wants to put an end to herself. Also despair is another mood seen in “The Boarding House” as the characters are seen as helpless and hopeless, as they can not escape life.
The tone of “The Boarding House” is mellow and melancholic tone. There is no narrator or one protagonist in “The Boarding House”, however the three main characters, Mrs. Mooney, Polly Mooney and Mr. Doran’s voices all have a mellow tone as they realize that life doesn’t got the way one expects it too and that there is nothing one can do to change the situation they are in.
This mood and tone evokes a sympathetic reaction from the readers and aids the readers in understanding the characters.
